6/2007 View from the Bassment 06.02.07

It was six months since the last Ground Score show and changes did abound. It was great to get back out and play a gig. In the past six months we have started the recording process, lost a guitar player, found a guitar player, loved and lost, loved and found… but thru it all Ground Score has come out the other side.
The Saturday gig at Churchill’s was a lot of fun. The evening kicked off with a reggae bang as Burnin Man thru their roots down. With clever beats, killer bass licks, lots of guitar and an awesome saxophone these guys gave us a reggae beat down. These cats are a lot of fun and I encourage you to check them out in Jackson, Ann Arbor, Flint, or wherever they might play. We really enjoyed their music and had a great time.
After Burnin Man, Ground Score took the stage. We opened with a free Jam that our new Guitarist Chris Mockridge pulled out of thin air. Once we were all warmed up, we started our set with a new song called Ladders. This snappy little number led us into an old favorite, Myself. Myself was full of killer improvisation and great new guitar licks provided by Chris. The jam in the middle went so long the drummers and the keyboardist complained that they were already tired. After Myself we played a new instrumental we have dubbed Space Demons. This killer short but progressive jam shook the last of the cobwebs off and blasted us into a new dimension.
The middle of the set included The Rant, and a new blues jam that jumped right into Dictate the Mood. Both songs were rocking rollicking fun. Next we delved into our psychedelic new song Purple Skies followed by Along the Way (an old favorite) and Rezin Tokes (a fan favorite). All three songs were full of excellent improv that can only be replicated in a live setting. We then did a racing phunky version of Fuzzy and rolled it into the only cover tune of the night Roses are Free by Ween. These two songs created the coolest musical sparks to date. Finally we busted into an extended version of Manual. Everyone added there perspective to this song which created a wonderful sonic atmosphere that I look forward to creating again.
We were ready to rap it up when requests came for one more song. We played a new song called Infectious. This song went off with out a hitch. Again we tried to rap it up but the crowd asked for an improv jam. Again our new guitarist came thru with a simple yet roomy two chord riff that we all built off of. The Jam was killer and great fun.
Overall the band and crowd had a great time.
Thanks to all who came out. Thanks to Steve (as usual) for all that you do and special thanks to Churchill’s and Tim for letting us play. Thanks to Jake, Scott, Bri, Beverly, and everyone else who came to watch us play. New pictures coming soon.

We look forward to seeing everyone on July 14th. Don’t be late!
